Computer Aided Drafting
(C.A.D.)

Bellmont, Jay County

Purposes

The Area 18 CAD class offers students an opportunity to pursue their interests in the drafting and design industry, using a computer-aided drafted (CAD) workstation. Personal computers and expensive frame computer systems share the same industrial environment and are becoming an industry standard.

Course of Study

Students in CAD use personal computers with AUTOCAD Microstation and Surfcam software. Each workstation uses a digitizing tablet as a data input device in addition to the keyboard and screen menu items. These stations are linked to laser printers for checkplots and to pen plotters and inkjet plotters for larger color plots of their work.

Students use the CAD work-station to apply their drafting skills and knowledge learned "on the board" in their "home" schools, and expand to the computer's capability to design in 3-D. Students have an opportunity to choose an emphasis in mechanical or architectural drafting for their creative projects.

Students are encouraged to develop their DRAFTING I, II or architecture skills at their home school before enrolling in Vocational CAD. In addition, students who are pursuing engineering and architectural careers need to take Advanced Math and Science classes. Mechanical Drafting students are encouraged to take Machine Trades to gain hands-on experience with Surfcam.
